a.		A major sub-plot, dealing with a real-life assassination, was cut from the French story before the films release.

d.		When filming began in 1936 (in color), the original opera finale was also recorded, staged and shot. By the time shooting recommenced in black and white, this idea was scrapped and replaced with an elaborate fake Russian opera "Czaritza" created by Herbert Stothart to music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, presumably to allow for a big Duet (in "Tosca", she murders Scarpia by stabbing him through the heart!). The rewritten story of "Maytime" presumably demanded it. Sadly, the Technicolor "Tosca" sequence does not appear to have survived, which is a pity as it would have been fascinating to see MacDonald and Nelson Eddy in a major operatic sequence and in color.

The censored name was Trotzkiy, a partner of Wladimir Lenin and Stalin, who was the head of the government of the USSR at the time the movie is set in (1927) was against him.

a.		This movie represents the seventh of nine teamings of director J Lee Thompson with star actor Charles Bronson. The two first collaborated on St. Ives, The White Buffalo, Caboblanco, 10 to Midnight, The Evil That Men Do and Murphys Law. After this movie, they made Messenger of Death and Kinjite: Forbidden Subjects.
b.		Roger Moore was initially cast in A Bridge Too Far, but was unable to appear when problems surrounding the Bond franchise meant that The Spy Who Loved Me was made a year later than originally planned, therefore coinciding with the production dates.
c.		Mel Brooks had problems with Yugoslavian extras who did not speak English. Some extras playing museum guards were to walk through the museum ringing a bell and shouting, "Closing time! Closing time!" The extras misunderstood and walked through the scene shouting "Cloakie Bye! Cloakie Bye!" Brooks decided "Cloakie Bye" was funnier, so he left it in the movie.

a.		Jane Froman is in studio records/casting call lists but did not appear in the movie. A modern source lists many actors in the cast, but the following were not seen: Betty Farrington, Bess Flowers, Mary Marsh, Gertrude Astor (all as Interviewers), Bill Elliott (Friend) and Florence Fair (Dowager). It is probable that these were cut from the final release print, since it is listed as an 8-reel film, yet it is also listed for only a 64-minutes running time.
b.		Anne Bancroft encouraged Mel Brooks to write the music as well as the lyrics for "Hope for the best, expect the worst" and subsequently at least one song for all of his movies. She was like an angel on his shoulder when it came to songwriting.
c.		The car driven by Bakers nemesis through out the film was in reality one of the few Dodge Miradas driven in NASCAR in the early 80s. For some reason the car is constantly (and incorrectly) referred to as a Buick.
d.		MGM did not want to fund the arduous, expensive trip to Death Valley to shoot the final part of the film, and instead wanted von Stroheim to take the scenes in Oxnard, California. The director ended up getting his way.
