a.		The main character is based on Arch Hall Sr., director and star of films such as Eegah and Wild Guitar, and was an Army buddy of the films writer. Hall was indeed a pilot, as is his son, Arch Hall Jr. Hall was aware his friend Bowers was writing the script and was flattered and pleased. Once the film was completed and in release, Hall sued the producers of this movie for invasion of privacy. The suit was apparently dropped or settled out of court. Bowers, writing later about his friend and the incident, not only bore Hall no malice, he thought Halls actions were consistently in character for the sharpie with whom hed served in uniform.
b.		The movie was made in 1970, and depicts a Porsche 917 winning the 24 hours of Le Mans. The 1970 edition of Le Mans was indeed won by a Porsche 917. This marked Porsches first overall win at the 24 Hours.
c.		Known for his meticulous preparation, John Lithgow had worked out certain scenes in his airplane seat in conjunction with the manufactured lightning outside the window. However, during filming, the crew member in charge of the lightning flashes would activate it too soon or too late, throwing off Lithgows timing. Although initially annoyed, he later came to value the experience after viewing the film, seeing that it added to his anxious, fearful character as he looked genuinely startled by the lightning.
d.		In the Italian post-synchronized version of the film, the following dubbers lent their voice to the English-speaking cast: Maria Pia Di Meo (Audrey Hepburn), Emilio Cigoli (Henry Fonda), Stefano Sibaldi (Mel Ferrer), Arnoldo Foà (Herbert Lom), Mario Besesti (Oskar Homolka), Lidia Simoneschi (Anita Ekberg), Gualtiero De Angelis (Helmut Dantine), Amilcare Pettinelli (Barry Jones), Fiorella Betti (Milly Vitale), Rosetta Calavetta (May Britt) and Carlo Romano (John Mills). Vittorio Gassman dubbed himself.
