a.		Known as "the picture that broke Grand National". Grand National Pictures, which produced and distributed this film, was a "B" studio known mostly for low-budget westerns and action pictures. It signed James Cagney during one of his frequent disputes with Warner Bros. and saw this picture as its chance to compete with the major studios by doing a lavish musical with a major star. It poured more than $900,000 into this film, not much by MGM or 20th Century Fox standards but a tremendous sum for a small studio like Grand National. Unfortunately the film was a major flop and the studio lost just about all the money put into it. Grand National folded just a few years later, having never recovered from the financial beating it took on this picture.
b.		Environmentalists who opposed this film being shot in the Blue Mountains Wilderness Area took the film producers to court, along with the government department which issued the filming permit. The court found that the filming permit had been issued illegally and ordered the producers to stop shooting the film in the wilderness area immediately. An alternative location had to be found.
c.		Due to all the unwanted fame the book and film had brought upon the real house in Amityville, the current owners have replaced the "evil eyes" windows with normal rectangle-shaped windows.
d.		The restoration of the Directors Cut took place in 2005. Most of the original elements of the film were not preserved, so Editor Kevin Stitt and Director Brian Helgeland had to make do with what was preserved from the original film stock and had to reassemble the film that way without the use of Avid film editing. At the same time, the blue tint in which the theatrical version looked visually was removed for more vivid color tones and contrast, but still preserving some of the grittiness of the theatrical cut.

Alperson had previously paid $25,000 for the rights to the perfect James Cagney vehicle, "Angels with Dirty Faces", and was literally begged by staff producer Edward Finney to film that property first. In the same restaurant, Vincent smokes Drum, which is a Dutch rolling tobacco. Also, the book version of the movies screenplay includes some cut dialogue between Vincent and Mia - he realizes that she was "the girl in the cowboy hat" in a photo at a hash bar they both visited, the Cobra, which is right across from the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam. Also in the scene at the motel with Butch, he calls Fabienne "tulip", then she says she likes to be called "tulip", as this flower has come to be a trademark symbol of the Netherlands.
c.		Maule confesses to Alma that he is afraid of horses, but in real life Virginia OBrien was afraid of horses.
