in the film history tome "The Movie", "Warner Brothers, who had made the one explicitly anti-Nazi film of the US pre-war period (1939, "Confessions of a Nazi Spy" were unofficially told by the US government not to make any more such pictures. In April 1940 the news filtered back to Hollywood that several Polish exhibitors who had shown "Confessions of a Nazi Spy" had been hanged in the foyers of their own cinemas."

The title is a pun on the French expression, "Oh, quel cul tas!", meaning, "Oh, what a (cute) bum you have!" It is taken, pun and all, from a painting by the artist Clovis Trouille (1889-1975) "Oh! Originally, one idea for the script called for Harry Cooper to die from the gunshot wound received from Ben before his daughter became a zombie, which would have resulted in Helen coming down the stairs to find him eating their daughter, rather than the daughter eating him.
