b.		John Houseman was cast as Professor Kingsfield only after director James Bridges tried and failed to interest James Mason, Edward G. Robinson, Melvyn Douglas, Sir John Gielgud, and Paul Scofield. Although Houseman had appeared in a small but important role in Seven Days in May, he had previously been known primarily as a radio (The Mercury Theatre of the Air; 1938s The War of the Worlds), stage (Orson Welles Mercury Theatre) and film (Julius Caesar) producer, and this was his first major film role. It won him the 1973 Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor.

The script was quickly rewritten to suit American actors, such that it would take place in Brooklyn instead of Belfast.

Director Michael Davis and Paul Giamatti had a lot of fun deciding on the look of Giamattis character, eventually settling on a bad comb over and a slightly lopsided goatee, indicating how sloppy the character could be in some areas. Unfortunately for Giamatti, he made Shoot Em Up during the 2005 Oscar season when his film Cinderella Man was heavily in play, and Giamatti had to attend all the major awards functions looking slightly dishevelled.

c.		Co-writer Bonnie MacBird first studied computer programming with paper and pencil in the 1960s during junior high school. While attending Stanford she made punch cards for use on a PDP-11 minicomputer at night when students were allowed access, and played a rudimentary version of Pong with lights on the computers control board. Before joining Steven Lisbergers company, MacBird worked as a mid-level story executive at Universal Studios where she tried unsuccessfully to get their story department to put their records in a database. It was MacBirds suggestion to Lisberger that they get computer pioneer Alan Kay as a consultant on the film they were developing. MacBird sent versions of the script via acoustic coupler to Xerox Palo Alto Research Center where Kay helped her edit them on the companys early version of a personal computer called the Alto. MacBird believes this makes her the first screenwriter to edit a screenplay on a computer, but chose the closest approximation to industry standard Courier font available so the studio would think it was typewritten. The character of Alan Bradley was based in part on Kay, and, along with the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Lab, the lab in the film was based on Kays lab at Xerox PARC. Kay and MacBird married in 1983.
d.		During the scene where the Sheriff orders Grace Sherwood "ducked" in the lake for being a witch, the row boat was slowly filling up with water and had to be bailed out with paper coffee cups between shots.
