hatched the idea for
Cars
whilst taking a cross-country trip on Route 66 with his wife and five sons in 2000, mainly at the behest of his wife who felt he was spending too much time at the studios. Upon returning to work, he contacted
Michael Wallis
, a famous historian on the subject. Wallis then took 11 Pixar animators in rented white Cadilllacs on two different road trips across the route to research the film. The animators picked up artefacts en route - such items as wheat, thistles, snake skin and road kill. All these items were attached to the cars as hood ornaments and then ceremoniously buried in the desert at the end of the trip.
