a.		In his autobiography, Elia Kazan says he wanted Marlon Brando to play the protagonist of his film, Eddie Anderson. Brando initially agreed to play the role, but backed out after the assassination of Martin Luther King, saying he could not go on with the film in light of such terrible events. While Kazan, a political person himself, took Brandos exit graciously, he wondered whether Brandos excuse was just a con and that he didnt really want to play the role. Kazan says that Brandos interest in playing the role, during their discussions, never got beyond his desire that the studio use a particular Italian wigmaker for his hairpieces. On his part, Kazan had urged Brando to lose weight so that the character would be "lean and hungry."

d.		Contrary to popular belief, Fred Astaire wasnt ever considered to play Willy Wonka. According to director Mel Stuarts book "Pure Imagination: The Making of Willy Wonka", Fred expressed interest in playing the eccentric chocolatier, but that wasnt brought to either Stuart or producer David L. Wolpers attention. Just as well, because, as Stuart says in his book, he didnt conceive of Willy Wonka as a 72-year-old man, which happened to be what Astaire was at the time.

She can be seen in the crowd as an extra playing a seasick passenger aboard a ship listening to the preacher played by Max von Sydow. Midler was also hired for a small speaking role and went to Los Angeles to film these scenes in a studio. Her scenes were cut from the final film. However, Bette used the money she earned to move to New York, where her career took off.

Donald Crisp,who plays David Ladds grandfather here, played the father in "Lassie Come Home" (1942)and had roles in three "Lassie" movies. Crisp was also James Brown, the kirk yard keeper, in Disneys Greyfriars Bobby: The True Story of a Dog (1961).
