a.		A deteriorating silent copy of this film survives in the UCLA Film and Television Archives.
b.		An alternate ending was shot, but cut from the final version. This other ending apparently takes place a few weeks (or perhaps months) after the main events of the movie. It appears in author/screenwriter James Dickeys original script as part of the final "dream" sequence, but not as the storys literal conclusion. The scene shows Lewis, Burt Reynolds, walking with a crutch (in Dickeys screenplay, his leg is supposed to be amputated below the knee). The sequence depicts Ed, Jon Voight, Lewis and Bobby, Ned Beatty, meeting with Sheriff Bullard, James Dickey, near the dam in Aintry. The sheriff displays to them a body placed on a stretcher and uncovers it, so that they can look at its face. No identifiable details of the body are shown, which was a deliberate choice, to make the audience uncertain whether the dead man is Drew, Ronny Cox, Don Job, Bill McKinney, or the Toothless Man, Herbert Cowboy Coward. The body was played by Christopher Dickey (James Dickeys son), who writes about the scene in his memoir, "Summer of Deliverance", and even HE doesnt know whose body it was supposed to be. In the screenplay, Ed awakens terrified from this dream, just before the face of the corpse is to be revealed.
c.		Julia Roberts was far from the first choice for the role of Vivian. It was offered previously to many successful A-list actresses including "brat pack" member Molly Ringwald (who starred in The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles and Pretty in Pink). Ringwald turned it down because she felt uncomfortable with the content in the script, and did not like the idea of playing a prostitute. She has since stated in several interviews that she regrets turning the role down.
d.		Hasbro released several toys based on the movies characters. These toys feature new "Automorph Technology," where moving parts of a toy in transformations allowed some other parts to shift automatically. This marks a rare time when Transformers toys are designed after the characters in the fiction, whereas normally, the toys are designed first (Although Michael Bay admitted most of the Decepticons had their appearances chosen before their characterization as Hasbro needed to get started on the toys).
