The role of "Horace Smith" was originally performed by Thomas Mitchell, but due to production problems shooting went over schedule and Mitchell had to leave before his scenes were shot due to a previous commitment. All of his previously shot scenes were scrapped and his part was recast with Henry Kolker and all his scenes were re-shot.

The Reporter asks him where he gets that stuff and Dead Serious holds up a newspaper. Well, the scene was about to be shot but no one brought a newspaper. The cast and crew were in an alley outside the coffee shop deciding how to re-work the scene because there was no time to get a paper. Keep in mind, the original line from Dead Serious was actually, "every 32 seconds in LA somebody is shot by a gang banger." The wind starts to blow, and a local newspaper blows up against Will Kanes (Dead Serious) leg. He picks it up and in bold letters it reads, young boy shot by gang banger. While it was sad for the boy who was shot, it brought a chill to the group.
b.		The movie theater that was in the film actually exists. It was also called the Strand theater on Duval Street in Key West. However, the theater went out of business, and a Walgreens drug store is located there. The good news is that the original façade of the theater was restored and is the front of the store.
c.		As a U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel, "Gene" Hambleton commanded the 57first Missile Squadron at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base from 1965 to 1971. He is better known as by his tactical radio call-sign, "Bat 21", he used in Vietnam when he was shot down in 1972 while jamming enemy radar, and parachuted behind enemy lines. When on the ground Col Hambleton found himself in the midst of an invasion force of over 30,000 North Vietnamese troops. While evading capture for eleven days he used his survival radio to call in air strikes against the invasion force. Rescue crews gave him coded instructions for where to go to be rescued based on golf course that he had played at different air force bases. Hambletons harrowing ordeal was recounted in the book Bat 21 (1980), which was made into a movie of the same name in 1988. He died from cancer on September 19 2004 at age 85.
