a.		At one point during the return flight there is a bang and nobody is very alarmed; its just a "burst helium disk." This was actually a significant event, though an expected consequence of the situation. The helium disk served a protective function in the LM descent engine and, after it burst, they might no longer be able to restart that engine. A final course correction, not shown in the movie, had to be done using thrusters instead.
b.		It is claimed that Private Aubrey Eberhardt of the US Armys parachute test corps at Fort Benning, Georgia, began the practice of U.S. Army paratroopers yelling "GERONIMO!" upon exiting the airplane after he and his comrades had seen this movie the night before an important test jump in 1940.
c.		Sara Montiel was originally cast for the role of Teresa and filmed some sequences in the Matto Grosso jungle. There are stills where she is seen handling a big snake, possibly an anaconda, along with Glenn Ford, Cesar Romero and others in the cast. In her 2000 autobiography Sara relates how the production ran out of money in Brazil and everybody was sent back to Hollywood with canceled contracts. Months later she was called to resume filming but by then she had signed with Warner Bros. and could not finish "El Americano." She was replaced by Abbe Lane and her scenes were re-shot.
d.		Before the passing of the Video Recordings Act, a cut version was briefly released by Media Video in the UK in the early 1980s. Although it was never listed as an official "nasty video", it was one of the films featured on a tape compiled by outspoken critic of sex and violence Mary Whitehouse and shown at the Conservative Party conference in 1984. This film has yet to receive a UK certificate.
