a.		It was widely thought that during the filming of this movie, Rosalind Russell stuck the hat pin through her head, and that when the scene was over she passed out. This is noticeable at the end of the "Some People" when she sings "Well, they can stay and rot!" When she takes the plaque, you can clearly see the other end of the hat pin doesnt stick out. However, her son Lance has stated that this isnt true: "I never heard of this alleged incident from my mother (or father). Its possible that she might have suffered a minor injury, but not anything serious, or I would have heard about it. She was dropped once by the Conga line guys in Wonderful Town and hurt her back, and I heard plenty about that!"

a.		The name of Groucho Marxs character, "S. Quentin Quayle", caused a stir when the film was first released due to the subtle but clear joke: the use of the term "San Quentin quail", which means "jail bait".
b.		An alternate ending was filmed, with James Woods reappearing as Father McFeely. It was a twist ending, and had Cindy discovering that all of her friends were dead. This ending was ultimately rejected.

He contacted the local fire department near the woods where the witchs house had been built and got them to assist the crew by pumping fire-fighting foam through the back of the set and out the windows and roof. Large quantities of food coloring were added, and with a couple of fireballs and colored smoke bombs, they had their scene.

b.		Based on a 1951 short story in Harpers Magazine entitled The Cyclists Raid, which in turn was based upon a real-life incident in Hollister, California in 1947. The actual incident, however, bore little resemblance to the events depicted in the movie. Although spirited, the cyclists did not run amok or become violent. In fact, the bikers were invited back to Hollister over the July 4, 1997 weekend for a fiftieth anniversary celebration of the original incident.

The Wayans Brothers later admitted being totally unaware that the name "Hell House" was also used in a Richard Matheson novel and the film version of that novel, The Legend of Hell House.
