1.
Which of the following famous movie trivia, is related to the Hollywood movie: Rain or Shine (1930)?
a.
Director
Darnell Martin
had a major falling out with her film studio Columbia as she objected to the title change, the fact that they marketed her film as a romantic comedy in the vein of "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and that they referred to her in their publicity as an Afro-American female director. Although Martin technically fits that description, she took exception to the fact that the studio was using her ethnicity as a tool to sell tickets.

. Note: Produced by Columbia Pictures as
Rain or Shine
, directed by
Frank Capra
and starring Joe Cook. Although the stage version was a musical comedy, the musical numbers were deleted from the film version due to the publics distaste of the genre from 1930- early 1933 (until successfully revived by Warner Bros). The film is one of the least seen Capra films and is generally regarded as giving us a mere approximation of the extent of Joe Cooks talent which was far more effectively conveyed on stage (a situation somewhat comparable to Al Jolsons film career). Dave Chasen, later a world-renown restaurateur, and
Tom Howard
reprised their stage roles for the film. None of the songs in the original musical were used in the film except as background music.
c.
The idea was brought to
Michel Gondry
by his friend the artist
Pierre Bismuth
who suggested, "You get a card in the mail that says: someone you know has just erased you from their memory..."
d.
In this film, comedian
Eddie Izzard
plays an English soldier who cross-dresses. Eddie is a transvestite himself, and one of his stand-up routines (concerning transvestites in the armed forces) goes, "The main element of attack is the element of surprise. So what could be more surprising than the first battalion transvestite brigade?" (See
Eddie Izzard: Dress to Kill
).
2.
Which of the following famous movie trivia, is related to the Hollywood movie: Rain or Shine (1930)?
a.
The plane flown by Cliff in the opening is the Gee Bee racer, specifically Model "Z" from 1931. It was built by the Granville Brothers Aircraft Company (brothers Zantford, Thomas, Robert, Mark, and Edward), hence the planes initials "G.B." The R-1 was for a time the fastest land-plane in the world, essentially a cockpit, wings, and tail built around an 800 hp Pratt & Whitney Wasp engine. James Doolittle (who would lead the bombing raid over Tokyo in 1942) won the 1932 Thompson Trophy race flying a Gee Bee R-1 at a speed of 252.686 miles per hour.
b.
The Warden, who is never named during the film, at one point refers to his "predecessors, Wardens Johnston and Blackwell." Warden Blackwell was the actual warden at the time of
Frank Lee Morris
s escape, and this script reference was clearly done to avoid legal trouble.
c.
The circus tent was set up in Burbank California, on the ranch of former heavyweight boxing champion
James J. Jeffries
, who also appeared as an extra.
d.
Director Vincente Minnelli wanted
Lana Turner
for the role of Emma, but was convinced that a more dignified actress like
Greer Garson
or
Jennifer Jones
was needed for the audience to understand the character more.
