The storyline for this film is loosely based upon the notorious 1977 St. Valentines Day murders in rural Indiana known as the Hollandsburg Massacre. The killings took place about 35 miles north of screenwriter/co-producer Anthony Bruces Indiana boyhood home. His reference material for the script included personal interviews with the sole survivor of the murders, the District Attorney who successfully prosecuted the case, a face-to-face jail house interview with the youngest of the four convicted killers 25 years after the murders, the confidential files of the FBI and the Indiana State Police as well local law enforcement officials.

One of the last scenes in the film, with Andre on the airplane, was filmed several months after the initial completion of the film. The scene was added because test audiences reacted badly to Erin standing-up Andre at the end of the film. The intention of the scene was to show that Andre was not a nice guy (as he had been throughout the film) and remove any sympathy viewers had for him. The fact that this scene was filmed so much later also explains why Andres hair is significantly different in that scene than in the rest of the film.
d.

There are several eerie coincidences between this story, which actually took place in Hollandsburg, Indiana and Truman Capotes "In Cold Blood", which took place in Holcomb, Kansas - both took place in the winter in Midwest farming communities beginning with the same first three letters of the towns name (Hol). Another coincidence is that the killers believed there was a great deal of money available at the locations they broke into, when in reality, both cases netted the killers around $40 and items such as radios and other trinkets. It was reported that a copy of the book "In Cold Blood" was found in the cell of the leader of the killers in "Murder at Random", who had been released on bail and was awaiting trial on drug charges when the killings took place.
