a.		It has been estimated that the opening title/credit sequence cost more (in unadjusted dollars) than the entire budget of any of the real Edward D. Wood Jr.s films.
b.		In this movie the motorman hijacker (played by Luis Guzmán) is the first of the villains to die, while in the original movie this character (played by Martin Balsam) is the only one to survive.
c.		For the films spectacular climax, the filmmakers found an abandoned housing tract just outside of Lancaster, California. A victim of the Savings & Loan crisis, the property had been untouched for over two years. 12 out of the 56 houses in the tract became a dramatic inferno for the scene. To meet EPA standards, each house had to be stripped of all insulation, paper, wiring, plumbing, and anything plastic. In addition to administering a heavy dose of flame retardant to each house, propane gas lines were used in each of the 12 houses. This allowed the creation of a fire that would not burn wood and one that could be lit and re-lit as needed for each take. Oddly enough, the fire sequences proved to be a welcome heat source during the night shooting, as it took place in January, where the desert temperatures dipped down to as low as 11 degrees Fahrenheit.
d.		Michael Clarke Duncan filmed two scenes with a broken leg. The scene where he takes Spot away from Gordon and James and the scene where Spot decides to stay with Gordon and James. Any shots of him standing up was a stand-in.

a.		This is the only movie in the series in which Riggs and Murtaugh manage to make an arrest, not counting the suspects Riggs arrests in the first film before they became partners. Unfortunately the suspect they arrested, Billy, is still killed before he can make it to trial.
b.		When the shark is destroying the cage after Hooper swims away, you can see the shark turn and twist upside down. This was actual footage shot by Ron Taylor. As seen and explained in a recent Jaws documentary, the Great White Shark the couple had been filming became entangled in the cages suspension ropes. The cage broke loose and sank to the bottom, however the shark managed to escape and swim off (as can also be seen in the film). After the shark had cleared the area, Ron had to take a second cage to the bottom in order to rescue the first. Ron and Valerie Taylor eventually went on to develop the chain-mail shark-proof diving suit.
c.		A print of this film survives in the Library of Congress.

a.		The Joker (Heath Ledger) falling from the Prewitt building mirrors a scene from the very first Joker story in Batman #1 (Spring, 1940) in which the Joker falls from a penthouse scaffolding, but is caught by the Batman.
b.		Originally, the Martian war machines were supposed to walk on visible electronic beams. This was attempted by having electrical sparks emanate from the three holes at the bottom of the machine. This was quickly abandoned for fear of it becoming a major fire hazard. The first two shots of the first war machine emerging from the gully has this effect. During filming, the actors were under the impression that they were dealing with the walking tripod machines of the book. This explains the farmhouse scene when Gene Barry says, "Theres a machine standing right next to us." However, the results of the walking can be seen wherever the Martian machines fly throughout the film even though the sparking effect was no longer used.
c.		The facade of the Harmonia Gardens still stands as of 2010 on the 20th Century Fox lot, though the park across the street is long gone.

A scene which was cut from the Theatrical cut of this movie, but restored in the Directors cut was a scene that took place between the scene where Riggs and Lorna compare scars/wounds and the scene where Riggs finds Murtaugh out on his boat. It shows Riggs at his beachside trailer (which appears to be undergoing some kind of renovation) on his couch watching a Three Stooges movie with both Sam and the dog from the Warehouse. The contractor McGee (who worked on Murtaughs hobby room in Lethal Weapon 2) also appears in the scene as the contractor performing the renovations to Riggs trailer. Later in the scene, Rianne drives over to the trailer and tells Riggs of her concerns about Murtaugh not coming home that previous night.
