The Hays Office--the industrys censors--initially was reluctant to approve the script because of its suggestion that the sheriff condoned the lynchings. The treatment of the lynchings and the characterization of those participating were discussed by the PCA and the studio at great length, and in a June 9, 1942 letter, PCA director
Joseph Breen
advised studio public relations head Jason S. Joy that the script would be approved if: "Major Tetleys" suicide is retained, "thus constituting a punishment for the ring-leader of the lynching party;" there is an indication that the whole gang will be arrested; the character of "Gil" is rewritten to make him less callous and more active in trying to stop the lynchings; and "Davies" denunciation of the killings is retained.

Reports that screenwriter
James Agee
wrote an incoherent screenplay have been proved false by the 2004 discovery of his first draft. That document, although 293 pages in length, and manifestly overwritten (as is common with first drafts), is, scene-for-scene, the film that
Charles Laughton
directed. Likewise false are the reports that Agee was fired, related most infamously in
Robert Mitchum
s autobiography. Laughton, however much he gnashed his teeth at having such a behemoth of a text in his hands with only five weeks to go before the start of principal photography, calmly renewed Agees contract and directed him to cut it in half; after much persuasion, he did. In Laughtons stage work ("Galileo", "Cain Mutiny Court Martial", etc), the great actor demonstrated he was a script editor of genius - he could induce the most stubborn and prideful writer to cut, cut, cut, and so he did in Agees case. Later, apparently at Robert Mitchums request, Agee visited the set to settle a dispute between the star and Laughton. Letters and documents located in the archive of Agees agent Paul Kohner bear this out -- they were brought to light by Laughton biographer Simon Callow, whose excellent BFI book about "Night of the Hunter" diligently sets this part of the record straight. The Agee first draft may eventually be published, but it has been read by scholars -- most notably, Professor Jeffrey Couchman of Columbia University, who published his findings in an essay, "Credit Where Credit Is Due". To assert Agees moral right to his screen credit in no way disputes Laughtons greatness as a director -- clearly, he was as expert with writers as he was with actors -- but Agee has been belittled, and even slandered, over the years (especially in Robert Mitchums autobiography), when his contribution to "Night of the Hunter" was of primary and enduring importance. (Submitted by F. X. Feeney, film critic and author, who has read the original Agee script.)
d.
Rosie ODonnell
accomplished a life long dream in this film, she had always wanted to voice a character in a Disney animated movie.
7.

a.

b.
Much of the crowd at the gas station where Harold Smith is pulled over after the night-time Torrance chase were part of a real biker gang, who verbally abused the police officers "arresting" the actor and demanding they leave him alone. Being an independent production, the film used real civilians who happened to be wherever they were filming. It was the police officers bad luck that at the gas station there was a real biker gang filling up.

9.
Which of the following famous movie trivia, is related to the Hollywood movie: Iron Man (2008)?
a.
At least two sequences were created completely in the editing room: In the original conception, three men were seen talking and bathing in red mud. They are startled when Caligula first appears in the hallway outside Tiberiuss pool. As Caligula walks down the hall, we see fragments of tortures that occur on the other side of the curtain. In the movie, the scene with the three men was moved *after* Nervas death, and entirely new dialogue was dubbed over the shot, making it appear that the men are discussing Nervas recent death and Tiberiuss imminent death. They appear to be startled, then there is a cut to Caligula across the palace, fantasizing about torture, intercut with the fragments of tortures that were meant to be about 15 minutes earlier in the film. Unused bits from the scene where Chaerea, Longinus, and a few senators discuss the possibility of Caligula dying from a fever were used to build a new scene toward the end of the film where (it appears) the men plot Caligulas murder. Almost all of the dialogue in this scene was invented in the dubbing stages, and most shots obscure the mouths of each speaker.
b.

and stars
Richard Burton
and
Elizabeth Taylor
read the script, they hated it so much that, unknown to Lehman, they changed all of the dialog back to Albees play save two lines: "Hey, lets go to the roadhouse!" and "Hey, lets come back from the roadhouse!" Albee said, "Two lines for $250,000, $125,000 a piece. Thats pretty good."
d.
The original Broadway production of "My Fair Lady" opened at the
Mark Hellinger

Rex Harrison
and
Stanley Holloway
