According to an interview that screenwriter Lawrence Wright gave to CBS in 2007, the film was a box office failure upon its theatrical release, "but it was the most-rented movie in America after 9/11." Wright also claimed that the initial release bombed because "Muslim and Arab protesters picketed the theaters. They were furious at being stereotyped as terrorists."

The opening night cast included Constance Collier as Carlotta Vance, Paul Harvey as Dan Packard, Conway Tearle as Larry Renault and Cesar Romero as Ricci (character deleted from the movie). The play had 2 Broadway revivals, the last in 2003.

a.		The movies title is a reference to the song Mississippi Goddam, which was written and most famously recorded by Nina Simone. Simone wrote the song in 1963 as a protest against the racial injustices that inspired the civil rights movement, especially the assassination of Medgar Evers in Jackson, Mississippi, on June 12, 1963, and the Klan-set bomb that blew up the 16th Street Baptist Church and killed four little girls in Birmingham, Alabama, on September 15, 1963. Simone famously performed the song in front of tens of thousands of people at the third Civil Rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in 1965. The chorus of the song is, "Alabamas got me so upset; Tennessees made me lose my rest; and everybody knows about Mississippi goddamn!"

The dowager character played by Marie Dressler is reportedly based on actress Mrs. Patrick Campbell, for whom George Bernard Shaw wrote the role of Eliza Doolittle in the play "Pygmalion", the basis for the musical My Fair Lady.
