Both men wanted Robert Redford for the role of Guy Woodhouse, but negotiations broke down when Paramounts lawyers blundered by serving the actor with a subpoena over a contractual dispute regarding his pulling out of Silvio Narizzanos film Blue. Other actors considered were Richard Chamberlain, Jack Nicholson and James Fox. Laurence Harvey begged to do it, Warren Beatty turned it down claiming "Hey! Cant I play Rosemary?", before the part was offered to John Cassavetes. For Minnie and Roman Castevet, William Castle suggested Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, the famous Broadway acting duo. He even tried to convince Polanski to let him play the part of Dr. Sapirstein, a role eventually filled by Ralph Bellamy.
c.		This film also marks the second time that Judi Dench, and another actress playing the same part, have both been nominated for an Oscar. Previously, Dench won Best Supporting Actress for playing Queen Elizabeth I in Shakespeare in Love, the same year that Cate Blanchett was nominated for playing the part in Elizabeth.

Another band considered for the movie was Van Halen, but Warner execs warned Arkush that they were raucous and would be difficult to handle. Finally, an exec name-dropped the Ramones, who recorded for Sire Records, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Records. Arkush, being a huge fan of the band, agreed. To this day, Rundgren regrets passing up the role he was offered.

b.		The final scenes in the movie were filmed along a permanently closed section of PA Route 61 in Centralia, Pennsylvania. An underground mine fire which began in 1962 forced the closure of the highway and the relocation of the residents in the 1980s. Debris had to be cleared away so as to make the roadway look usable. Gaps in the asphalt released a sulfuric odor and wisps of white smoke. Care had to be taken to keep it out of frame.
