Though Callahans Diner was a set built for the film, the Callahans Diner logo and window script is identical to that used by Callahans Diner at 1213 Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica, California. The "Dirty Harry" reference inherent in the Diners name may simply be an added plus.

When she asked Scorsese what he knew about women, Scorsese replied "Nothing, but Id like to learn." Satisfied with his enthusiasm, Burstyn immediately hired Scorsese.
