a.		The Coen Brothers original idea for the picture was as a short film about Dannys stoned bar mitzvah and his meeting with Rabbi Marshak. All of the other content in the movie grew out of that sequence.

a.		Eve Channing" is a combination of "Eve Harrington" and "Margot Channing", the two main characters in Joseph L. Mankiewiczs All About Eve. "Higgs" is the name of the dead body in Tom Stoppards play "The Real Inspector Hound", a parody of Agatha Christie-type mysteries. "Alec Cawthorne" is also the name of a film writer for the BBC. The name Alec Cawthorne is virtually an anagram for "Or Michael Caine". Just as they are finishing, the firm alarm goes off and the sprinkler system starts. They run out of the room and are greeted by Roscoe who takes a picture of the naked couple. b.		As with all Coen brothers movies, there are many allusions in the film. In A Serious Man many of the allusions are Biblical. Larry is a Job-like figure, a good man to whom many bad things happen with no explanation. When he is on his roof, he sees over his neighbors fence and looks at his neighbors beautiful wife naked in her yard, just as King David saw Bathsheba. His son Dannys looking at the oncoming tornado recalls God speaking to Job from out of the whirlwind, saying He will not explain why these bad things have happened to him.
